South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings, together with Purdue Polytechnic High School (PPHS) Head of School Scott Bess and members of the SBCSC School Board, will host two town hall meetings on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.

The purpose of the meetings is to hear community members' views about the corporation’s potential partnership with Purdue University and housing Purdue Polytechnic High School within Washington High School.

Purdue Polytechnic High Schools focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Currently, there are two high schools in Indianapolis, opened in 2017 and 2019. The mission of PPHS is to provide a high-quality, STEM-focused education to underrepresented students, and promises preferred admission to Purdue University for Purdue Polytechnic High School graduates.

The morning meeting will be held from 10:00 a.m to 11:30 a.m at the Civil Rights Heritage Center, 1040 W. Washington Street, South Bend, 46601. The evening session will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Washington High School, 4747 W. Washington Street, South Bend, 46619. Spanish language interpreters will be available at both sessions.

“We want to our community members to have an opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions about the possibility of housing Purdue Polytechnic High School in Washington High School,” Cummings said.

“In order for our board to make an informed decision, it’s critical for them to hear from teachers, parents, students, and other community members,” Cummings said. “These meetings will provide them with answers to many of their questions, and by including the Head of School from Purdue Polytechnic High Schools in Indianapolis, they will be able to hear from someone who has in-depth knowledge.”

On December 16, the SBCSC School Board voted to proceed with negotiations to house the PPHS within the district’s Washington High School. If the board votes in favor of PPHS inside Washington High School, it will enroll up to 125 students in its freshman class in 2020 on a lottery basis. PPHS South Bend, like its Indianapolis campuses, would operate a slow-growth model, adding an additional grade every year.
